香港發展過程揉合傳統與現代，先住民與移民，農村背景與城市發展，東西交融，殖民、被殖民，政經背景下的自由度，冷戰體制及「一國兩制」下的資本主義與社會主義等，極為繁複地相互交融與滲透入文化之中。香港文學也因此展現出特殊且複合的本質。本書探討香港和香港人想像的文學，也納入作者對它們的主觀與客觀想像。首先講述香港文學的獨立性、範疇、特徵，續至香港文學形成或正在形成的傳統與演變。再探香港中短篇小說中的女性形象與外國女性家政勞動者「菲傭」。最後選取香港作家劉以鬯、西西、也斯的代表作，細究他們在自身作品中如何想像香港與香港人。
